In Clues, Myths and the Historical Method (1990), historian Carlo Ginzburg (b. 1939, Turin) introduced the “indicial paradigm,” a research method based on collecting and interpreting clues. This investigative spirit inspired the name of our page: CLUES.
CLUES: Art History Research in Progress is not a website, but a research notebook or academic blog for the art historians working at the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA) in Brussels. CLUES offers a space to publish the part of their research, inventory work, and noteworthy discoveries—from rare artifacts to archival finds—that doesn’t fit into conventional scholarly formats. On this, it offers a complementary tool to the Institute’s platform BALaT.
The blog reflects the KIK-IRPA’s trilingual policy. The platform’s general structure is in English, but authors are free to publish in Dutch, English, or French, according to their preference. . Our objective is to disseminate research findings and enhance their accessibility within the academic community and to a broader audience.
